ANDREA PICHL in dialogue with ZOE LEONARD, KROME GALLERY LUXEMBOURG, March 27 – May 9, 2015
Krome Gallery Luxembourg is pleased to present the third exhibition in the series "in dialogue with” showing new works by Berlin-based artist Andrea Pichl and the photography of Zoe Leonard.
Variations in socialist architecture is the prime focus of Andrea Pichl’s research. For this exhibition she will show three of her latest variable tower sculptures based on the floor plans of apartment compounds found in three very different cities and social spaces: the high-rise blocks of Halle-Neustadt (built in the former eastern part of Germany), the high-rise towers of Co-op City in the Bronx (New York), and the satellite town Ballymun (near Dublin airport).
The sculptures will be accompanied by image projections and prints from Pichl's documentary archive of cityscapes, along with two significant series of raster-like drawings in pencil.
Zoe Leonard will show House alongside Pichl's project. Capturing a prefabricated “American family home”, this photographic work questions our strong associations with the American dream and its pursuit for freedom, sprawling out into our past and imagined views of life outside the city bounds.
Zoe Leonard and Andrea Pichl both present archeological takes on urban living: Leonard with reflexivity of the documentary genre; Pichl through a mode of display that reflects on the conglomeration of image and object in the construction of spatial memory.
Andrea Pichl has recently presented solo exhibitions at the M HKA, Museum for Contemporary Art, Antwerp; Kunstmuseum Moritzburg, Halle and in the exhibition space of the Metalworkers Union Building in Berlin. She participated in many group shows such as „Architektonika“, National Gallery at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin.
Zoe Leonard's recent solo exhibitions were presented at the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus; Secession, Vienna and the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich.
This exhibition is part of this year's European Month of Photography in Luxembourg. www.europeanmonthofphotography.org
